"Don't worry about the rat while your running, they're used to this," used to dying that is. There were some tests that were too risky to use gifteds. Gifteds cost more money to capture, control, feed, cage, run tests, and couldn't simply be bred in the labs. As far as they were aware it was random who or who wasn't gifted. When possible rats were used which were far cheaper to care for than gifteds, and unlike rats gifteds were an investment.

Verner typed in the commands to measure the speed Duncan would reach so he could later compare it to any possible damage the rat would sustain. He imagined there would at least be some damage done to the rat.

Duncan held the rat up to his chest in order to hold onto it better. It looked up at him with nervous pink eyes and Duncan petted the animal softly. He did what he had done before without the rat.

Sadly that required a lot of turns, which requirred balance that Duncan did not have. He tripped and fell. He managed to turn just enough so that he didn't land on the rat and crush it. Startled, the rodent jumped out of his hands and ran to the far side of the room.

"I am sorry." Duncan said softly. "I didn't mean to.."

This test would be harder to preform then he thought with Duncan unable to keep from tripping over his feet. He could always try putting the fan in the room, that was as long as the mechanics hadn't 'fixed' that too. As far as he was aware though they hadn't. What he was more concerned about was the force of the fan causing the verified broken equipment to fall out of place. It also might just mess up the test results, if Duncan was running the same speed as the fan the force acting on the rat would be about, nothing.

Well this test was a failure! Might as well make this not a complete waste of time. "Put the rat in the cage and put him in the middle of the room. I want you to run around him." He wanted to see if Duncan ran fast enough in a circle to create a vaccum. They'd know he succeeded when the thing ran out of air.

"Okay." Duncan mumbled. At least Verner didn't sound like he was too upset with Duncan. The rat was a little more difficult to catch then the last time since he was scared of Duncan now. But in the end Duncan was able to get it and put it back into the cage.

Duncan breathed in and out deeply. He was scared that he would trip again. He hated to see people upset with him, even if it was someone like Verner. He started up again, running around in a circle like Verner had asked.

Inside the cage, the rat was having a hard time breathing.

It was hard to even see the rat from here, so it was difficult to tell if it was running out of air. It would be difficult to tell even if he was right in front of the creature. That was what the computers were for, the scanners were telling him there was a low CO2 output at the coordinates where the rat was, which didn't mean a thing it was a rat. He brought up a file to see what their typical CO2 output was and determined it was less than typical. It was breathing less than was normal. Good they were getting somewhere.

To be positive this rat wasn't just breathing less by chance he'd need to see if it's condition worsened. He wasn't going to say anything to Duncan though as it could just cause him to trip.

Duncan loved to be able to get his energy out. Tests usually were not dangerous for him and usually let him run. However that did not mean he was not scared of being taken for a test. Afterall the last one with Alex was quite tramatic for him.

Verner had not told him how long to go. So Duncan just guessed when he should. If Verner wanted him to keep going he could always start up again. He went for a few more mintues before he slowed to a stop.

Duncan looked down at the cage. The rodent was no loner standing up and looking around. It was on it's side. Duncan kneeled down and inspected the creature and tears started forming at the edges of his eyes.

"I killed it!" He said.

Indeed he had killed it, simply by running in circles. This was very important information to know. What to do with such information though? It certainly made him to be considered more dangerous, but his temperament was so mild he'd never imagine him harming or killing anyone on purpose. On accident... he could see it happening but even then it didn't seem too likely. Regardless of his temperament though his ability still had to potential to kill.

The death of the rodent wasn't a big deal. They didn't live very long anyway, might as well die contributing something useful to them. They were also easily replaced. Ethics wise they did far worse to rats and it was lucky it had suffocated to death. Better than some of the other things they did with them. It wasn't like they purposelessly tortured them, it was all for good purpose. Correction most scientists didn't torture them without cause, some scientists came to the labs for all the wrong reasons. He knew a scientist like that and was sure if they weren't in the labs they'd be torturing animals and people illegally in their own country.

"I'll bury it later," more like dissect to see if there was any other damage aside from suffocation then incinerate it, but burying sounded much less brutal.

Duncan fell down onto his kneels and stared down at the now still animal. The tears started falling freely and landing on both the cage and the dead rat. Duncan got attached to things very easily. Even though the rat wasn't very tame and he had not spent much time with it, Duncan loved the rat.

"You said I wouldn't hurt it!" He bawled. "It's dead! I killed it, I..."

He was breathing rabidly and the area around his eyes got red. Duncan was no killer. He even had issues with killing bugs. In his mind he was a murderer now that he had killed the rat.

Great, he was contaminating the body with his tears. He needed to dissect that later. It's not like he could just tell him to stop. The gifted already realized he was the purpose of the rat's death so he couldn't tell him it was sick and died on it's own.

Maybe it was best to get him out now, with him contaminating the dead rat, and being in the middle of the room where the broken equipment was. Verner wasn't quite sure he wanted to send the guard in the  middle of the room to retrieve Duncan while there was broken equipment, so he instructed the gifted to move.

"Can you move towards one of the walls?"

Duncan whiped his eyes and nodded slowly. He took a few steps backward so his back was but aganist the wall then let himself slide down. He sat so that his knees were up to his face. He wrapped his arms around his legs as if he were hugging them. He put down his head so his forehead was resting on his knees and he face could not be seen.

He breathing was uneven and every once in a while he would take in a sharp breath that made a high pitched sound. His throat was already raw and his vision was blurred by the tears.

Verner turned to the guard, "Can you get him out?"

The guard went to move into the testing room when Verner stopped him, "Oh, can you get the cage too?" It would save him the trip of going in to get the rat himself. He didn't want to go into a testing room with broken equipment. He wrote a few notes from the test he'd need to type up later.

There was quite a bit more he needed to accomplish. He'd need to have Caleb's blood analyzed, dissect and examine the rat for damage, type up his notes, and bring in the mechanics again. He'd probably bring in the mechanics first. Really they said it would be fixed today, and he was hoping he wouldn't have to deal with broken equipment anymore.

Duncan was so caught up in his emotions that he did not realise the guard was there until he was standing over him. He slowly lifted his eyes but barely moved his head.

"Get up." The guard said. There was a delay between the order and Duncan actually obeying it. He stood, his head drooped. He little terrorbly defeated and weak. It looked like you only had to breathe on him to send him toppling over.

The guard restrained him and then leaned over to pick up the cage by the handle. He then led Duncan out of the room. Duncan looked at Verner as if he were looking at a strange monster. He was much more scared of him now.

Verner recognized that look of fear and had seen it in many other gifteds before. It wasn't his job to keep gifteds happy, his job was to advance their knowledge on how gifteds work. His job was to preform tests so they may eventually know how to control gifteds and use them in wars. There was no way to do that without preforming a few less than ethical tests. There was no possible way to do his job and keep gifteds happy, so he never truly bothered to try.

He took the cage with the rat from the guard before thanking him. "Could you put him in his cell?" He didn't have anything else planned for Duncan so unless Lucius requested for him there was little more use for the gifted for the day.

That wasn't a problem for him, he had a lot of work to do starting with bringing those mechanics back in here.

Duncan walked in somewhat of a daze. He wasn't thinking about where he was going, or anything for that matter. If the guard was not guiding him he would have walked into a wall. He did not speak or make any sound apart from some sniffleling.

"What did you do to him? Beat'em?" Someone said and Duncan flinched. The man was right in front of him but he was so spaced out he did not notice.

"Na. He's just a sensitive one." Said the guard. "Aren't ya?" He said and he lightly shoved Duncan as if he were messing with a friend. Duncan's sholders went up and his head down. He closed his eyes like he thought if he didn't see them they were not there.

"Yes sir." He said softly as if he were a well trained slave. A few mintues past before the two men parted ways and they were off again. Duncan was thankful to be back in his cell.

Verner had called in the mechanics, who didn't quite understand why they were called in. "You said it was fixed?"

"When we checked the equipment it was working fine." The first mechanic seemed awefully sure of himself, the other remained quiet observing where the machinery would be in the ceiling of the testing room.

He typed in the command to start lowering the equipment, which gave an aweful metal grinding screetch. Both the mechanics looked surprised and concerned. "Is this fine to you?" He wasn't exactly mocking their intelligence, he knew one of them and knew that all of the mechanics here were well trained. They had to be to work with such complex machinery.

There was no way he had the time to stay here and wait to ensure his lab was indeed being fixed. The rest of his day was spent analyzing Caleb's blood, carefully examining the rat that Duncan had killed, and typing up the new information he had of Caleb. All of this work he had to do took him awefully close to the time when all lights in the building would be turned off.

He came into work the next day feeling much less pressure than the precious one. The first day dealing with a new arrival always did tend to be the busiest.

Lab Rats (Gifted Roleplay)
Setting

All the characters are at a lab in a remote island. All the guards and scientists live in buildings around the lab. Most of the lab is under ground. The lab is very guarded and is pretty much impossable to excape from. There are rooms of about five Gifteds all in their own cell, but they are able to see each other and speak to each other.

Plot

In our world, we expect we all have the same kinds of abilities, we can all do the same things, it all just depends on what you practice. However that believe is wrong, there are people born with strange, fantastic and even dangerous powers known as Gifteds. It doesn't matter if the parents are Gifted, the children produced seem to be randomly Gifted or non-Gifted.

Of course normal people fear the Gifteds, they are stronger than them, more dangerous than them and they have no way of knowing who is who. That's why when people learned of them the hunt for Gifteds started almost immediately.

The caught Gifteds were sent away to a place only known as 'The Labs' where they are experimented on to find their weaknesses and their strengths. Their final goal is to find a way to control them and use them for wars.

History

Lucius brought Nori and Alex for a test to see if Alex could heal Nori's sickness.

Alex was drugged in order to savely bring him back to his cell.

Kadvar told Alex his plans to excape by writing on a card and passing it to him.

Kadvar is dirtying his cell to try to attract Nori.

Rusty is being lazy and not updating this.

Rules

Please play as the minority group so we don't get overflowed with one type of character.

Please look at other characters and do not make Gifteds with a power someone already has.

All powers must have weaknesses. For example, most Gifteds will loose control of their ability while under stress.

Only one power for each Gifted.

Both guards and scientists carry weapons, but scientists will only use them if a guard isn't around.

No killing without permission.
