The rest of the evening was rather uneventful, consisting of completing paperwork and planning tests for the strength gifted he worked with. Repairs to his lab would be finished tomorrow and one of the higher ups wanted him to make up for "lost time". As if it was his fault the gifted had damaged some equipment. Like he was to blame for failing to control or stop him when older and more experienced scientists had given up on testing with the gifted, and made him his responsibility. Last time he checked all the equipment in his lab was suppose to be durable and indestructible. Apparently, the one thing he had decided to use to keep him in check was one of the few pieces of equipment that could be damaged by strength gifteds.
The next morning Verner checked his email to see if his lab was fixed yet. Instead there was an email with a message he wasn't expecting or hoping to see. There was a new arrival, couldn't they have told his yesterday? He checked the date stamp to find the message was sent within the last hour. Why was it he seemed to be the last person to know of this? He checked the second email hoping it would tell him his lab was fixed, but no. There was a new security overhaul, which was useless to know as it stated he'd be assigned a guard anywhere from the end of this month and the next. Considering he was a lower priority compared to some of the more experienced scientists, it was more likely he'd be assigned a guard towards the end of next month.
He printed what little information there was on the gifted and started making his way towards his lab. The new gifted was supposed to arrive very soon, and he'd need the lab to be ready. Ice gifted, that's what he'd be working with. While reading a scientist had decided now was a good time to make idle conversation. No it wasn't. On a typical day he would've gladly stopped to talk, but today he simply didn't have that kind of time.
"Hey did you hear about the new security overhaul?" The scientist seemed to be unable to recognize just how busy he really was.
"Yes sure, but I need-"
"I was assigned my guard yesterday, he's not too bright but seems efficient enough. Did you get yours yet?" The scientist had cut him off rather abruptly.
"I don't have time today, new arrival." That seemed to be all the explaining he needed as the scientist simply nodded and moved on, thankfully.
He finally arrived to his lab to see a mechanic testing the once damaged equipment for any errors. "Is it fixed?"
"Think so," suddenly a light in the testing room fell out of place and started dangling by it's wires.
"That wasn't even broken before!" He was starting to become stressed from the pressure of the situation. There was no time for this.
"We had to pop it outta place to access some of the equipment, we can fix it easy."
We? It was then he recognized the second mechanic with a ladder in the testing room. He was familiar with him as he had talked with the mechanic before. "I need this fixed, I don't care how but it needs to happen now."
"We'll see what we can do," was the answer he gave. It wasn't a confident enough answer for Verner.
There was no time to hang around, he had to actually meet Caleb. He continued reading while he moved through the halls. He thought he saw Lucius but didn't bother looking up from his papers. It was days like this that made him feel overworked and overstressed. Normally he was a rather carefree person, but it was hard to stay that way when they only warn him an hour in advance of a new arrival.
