Celestia shook her head and remarked to her eldest daughter "That's just how Xevius is, he uses that mind of his to compensate for his lack of physical ability. You don't want him seeking vengance on you due to the fact he'll do something nasty. Midnight this world has things called pros and cons, Xevius uses logic when he doen't know, I combine logic and what I do know. I may not be much of a fighter but I'm a better hunter and I have a great deal of knowledge on what besides meat is edible and where to find it. When stronger dragons starve I don't, well not as much as they do sometimes." Celestia looked down at Midnight's siblings for a moment before continuing "Knowledge is a sort of power and one can draw stregnth from family ties. Working as a team you can do greater things than you could alone. Power often comes from family be it by blood or adopted. Family is a group of individuals who care about you and you them. Power from family and knowledge can compensate for or even streghthen physical power."
Midnight let a smile creep out. "I don't want it to come back and bite him. It was more of the point to make him doubt himself and look into things with his eyes not his brain." she replied. She at first thought it was more of a temper issue, that he had made her mad because he said that to her friend. But now it felt more like that, like she had tried to protect him, like she had protected her family back at the old den. Why can't I be more like my brother or sister? Normal? she prayed to yin and yang silently. Of course, no answer came back, but she felt more comforted afterwards.
Skey listened to her mother while she played with the three kits. The kits were about the same size she was. There was Tsuki (Luna) a female the oldest and the color of the moon with a belly as white as a cloud, the middle kit a male Kokuyoseki (obsidian)the color of obsidian with no markings, and the youngest Taiyo (sun) another female pure gold in color. Skye showed her new playmates her collection and they added things to it, deer hoof a bear's claw and a wolf tooth. Skye was most proud of the crystal she'd found and the kits looked at it curiously. Skye was happy as she could get.
Oak had heard Midnight's outburst, but didn't really care. At the moment, he was right behind one of the kits, in the shadows. He had decided to take up his mothers suggestion, and had placed some of the stuff the slimy bug was eating under some things in Skye's collection a bit earlier. He threw a rock in the opposite direction of himself, hoping to distract Skye long enough to let the thing loose a little bit away from Skye's collection. If it went there by itself, she couldn't blame Oak. In the back of his hearing, he heard his mother's lecture to Midnight, but didn't really care. He hoped that rock would distract Skye.
Skye looked where the stone fell and sniffed it, she knew Oak was up to something and wanted to see it so she turned back and looked over. By then the bug was in the pile and she missed it. The three kits knew what Oak had done but being kitsune they liked pranks and were mentally patting Oak on the back. Skye wasn't going to get angry it was just how he was. She spotted the bug and actually giggled "Nice try Oak, but you'll have to try better." She went over to her mother and asked to join her mother hunting wanting to give it a go, she smelled prey and edible plants almost like the wind was guiding her to her to a meal.
Oak stalked off, angry that it hadn't worked and she simply seemed quietly amused. Did nothing faze her? He'd prove that theory wrong eventually. He wondered if Midnight would start chasing him again if he bit her tail. Maybe they could translate that into some sort of game, no biting required, because that had been fun. Of course, Skye would never join in, she would probably always be looking for funny colored sticks and things. He decided to propose this hunting based game idea to midnight first, then the weird fox things. He walked over to midnight and asked her if she wanted too chase him, no biting involved.
Malvada tried to ignore Celestias lectures but was having a little harder time doing that than she thought "Oh for in the name of Yin and Yang Celestia! What does family ties have to do with knowledge and using calculations and logic all the time?" she paused then added "Even though I will admit there may be some form of strength in that that I just can not see, being that I never had close family to experiance it, mine left me on my own as a chick just to die and I'm doing perfectly fine..." she looked at her broken leg then back at Celestia "Well, mostly anyways."
Midnight turned to Malvada, putting Oak on hold. "Your luck will change malvada, just... be kind to others." Midnight had no idea why she said that but she had. She turned back to oak. "Why not?" she dashed after him, her headdown. She felt the more powerful dragon awaken in her but she didn't fight it. instead she let it soare over her intire body as she ran. It was wonderful! The most wonderful she had ever felt. She taged oak and slowed. Her heart raced as the feeling dissappeared from her limbs and returned to it sleeping state. "Now you chase me!"
Celestia replied to Malvada "Different kinds of power, I'm built a hunter meaning it's a strong point, you have a bit more of a fighter's build. You would most likely wipe the ground with me in a fight, I get injured easily. I'm fast and small, I can't use bulk to intimidate like you can." She opened her mouth revealing that four teeth were longer than the others like a mammal's canine teeth, she closed her mouth but resumed speaking "My teeth are built for killing dinner. Scales are hard for me to bite through, but I can crush the windpipe of a deer and sever the jugular in one bite. I can go through bone if I use the teeth in the back." Celestia looked skyward inhaling what scents she could find. She looked at her youngest "You want to go hunting already? I don't see why not but you have to hide in a tree when I begin stalking something and stay quiet understand?"
Skye almost squeeled with glee and stayed right underneath her mother during the whole walk into the forest. Skye was mimicing her mother's movements flawlessly. Celestia motioned for Skye to get into a tree which she did. She watched her mother get down low and creep twords a herd wild bovids of some sort, actually not much smaller than her mother. Skye spotted her mother's target an old injured bull on the edge. The herd was going through a breeding season, males fighting one another dividing up the cows. The lead bull had the most cows unchallanged. A new bull came into the field and confidently made his way to the leader of the herd. The newcomer bellowed his challenge confidently eager to take over the herd. The larger and stronger bull bellowed his acceptance of the challange and the two charged locking horns and shoving oneanother hooves tearing up the ground. Skye noticed her mother had stopped and fallen back watching the bulls, the new bull lost but refused to accept defeat and charged the leader of the herd goring him in the thigh and knocking him to the ground. The other bulls rose to their leader's defense. The new bull had unmistakable bloodlust and charged bast the other bulls only to find the old injured bull standing in front of the younger leader. The old bull met his end when the younger bull charged. By then the leader was back on his feet. He fought the new bull again this time protecting not his dominance but his herd. He charged ending the new bull and returning to the old bull who had sacrificed himself and let out a mournfull moo. Skye saw her mother going to drag the now dead murdering bull unhindered. Celestia dragged the bull back and remarked "Why hunt when the prey kills itself?"
Oak laughed, and when Midnight tagged him, he spun in a tight circle, beginning to chase her. He lowered his posture, and began to let each foot hit the ground and pull seperately, gaining maximum levergae. This was great! He felt energy rush through his veins, and jumped at Midnight, catching her tail, and roaring, clearly signifying a tag. Heraced past her, not bothering to lose his momentum running the opposite direction, and roared with glee. How could Skye possibly enjoy looking for weird sticks and following mom everywere when there were pastimes like this? He raced outside the cave and clawed his way up a tree, his namesake in fact, with Midnight close behind.
Celestia finished bringin the bovine home "There..." She got her breath back before making sure her chicks, Malvada, and the kitsune got their fill before feeding herself. She was unaware of how much Malvada ate in one sitting otherwise she wouldn't have gone after a bovid like this. "I didn't even have to kill it... turned on the other bulls and the leader of the herd did the work for me, there's a whole carcass back where I saw the incident happen. Know the habits and tendancies of your prey but still give them some respect. Don't kill what you don't need to It's an apex preditor's job to keep the numbers of the creatures they eat down, that way they don't breed to the point they run out of food. Eating another of you own kind is considered a taboo among many creatures including our kind." Celestia tore into the meat and ate her fill silently. Â
Midnight dug her claws into the tree and hauled herself up the trunk. She swung from bracch to branch, but couldn't keep up with oak. Within seconds he dissappeared, leaving her swaying on a branch. she looked around for a second, trying to spot him. " Oak! lets get down, you are a better climber than me and i dont want one of us to get stuck" she called into the air. She slowly worked her way down. On a branch not to far from the ground, she jumped and glided wobbily to the ground and stumbled into the landing. She then sat down and waited for Oak
Heisei saw the bovid and gaped, she'd never seen so much meat in one place. She was also shocked when Celestia invited her to eat part of the animal too. Being an opportunististic creature she wasn't one to turn a full belly down. "Idkamaksu..." [spelling?] She was thanking Inari for the blessing. She wondered if her new provider had a job for her. Most likely medical reasons that was fine by her. Heisei knew having her kits near dragons protected them from most of their preditors. Keep an eye on the sky, Celestia was doing it too her kits were just as vunrable as her own...
Oak, high up in the upper branches of the tree, decided he'd try out his wings right now. He jumped off, shouting as he did so, and quickly desecended, gliding in tight, circles, but he still hit the ground oretty hard. Luckily, Midnight broke his fall. The world went dark. He looked up, noticing that he and Midnight had crashed through several feet of ground, leaving a comical Midnight shaped imprint, next to an even more comical Oak shaped imprint, which was off to the side slightly. He picked himself up, mumbled an apology to Midnight, and looked around at the tunnel he'd landed in. He bounded off, taking the way to the left, yelling something to the effect of "Come on! Let's explore!" Amazingly, he was seemingly unfazed by the crash, except for a wing that he held more tenderly against his side than the other.
