It was a hot and sultry day in the kingdom, and no one seemed to be in a good mood. Everyone had been busy, bustling around and shouting things back and forth. A large crowd was forming on the plain just outside the Kings Dome, which was really a large rock formation/cave that was home to the royal family..and Taj.

That's what everyone would always adress them as. Taj, the future king and esteemed leader of the pride was seen as anything BUT royalty. Of course his immaturity and notorious reputation for troublemaking didn't help his cause very much. But today was a new day, and a very important one at that. It was the day that the young Prince Taj was expected to lead the King's Hunt.

The King's Hunt is not just any ordinary hunt. For one, the males don't usually do the hunting. The lionesses do. But today, the future king must prove himself by leading the lionesses to a herd of wildebeast. The lionesses job is to scatter the herd in all directions. Meantime, the leader of the herd and largest wildebeast is now exposed and the young king must move in for the kill. It is a risky endeavor, but it is tradition.

While it does not usually happen, there have been few occasion where lionesses have been injured or even killed. The lionesses gathered today for this generation's hunt were particularly nervous. Taj was no doubt agile, and strong, but when it came to hunting he thought it was more of a women's job, and chose to wait for them to bring in the dinner instead. Because of this, he very seldom hunted unless it was merely for sport.

The crowd murmered, and the lionesses were now becoming highly unnerved, knowing that the event would be taking place any moment now. Just then, the crowd parted to make way for their former King Taji, who was making his way through the crowd. All eyes were on him, their esteemed leader. But after he had passed, they noticed one small problem.

"Where's Prince Taj!?" One of the animals yelled from the crowd. As was custom, the future king would follow behind the former king, making there way to the frontlines. But Taj was nowhere to be seen.

The lionesses set off a commotion. "What a surprise!" one shouted.

"Taj!? A no show? Pfft, who'd ever suspect that!?" another snickered.

The crowd was insatiable to say the least. Taji did his best to reasure them. "I'm sure he will be here momentarily. Just running a little late." and then, under his breath, he added "again."

The sun was getting higher in the sky, and the crowd was becoming irritable. Taj was still nowhere to be seen. Taji stood with the others, a not too pleasant expression on'his face. The crowd was hot, and ready to just call it a day. One of the lionesses was growing weary, and yet another shouted "Oh come on, where is he?"

Just then, a loud, rumbling roar shook the foundations below their feet.

"RrrRrRaAaAArrRr!!!!"

The crowd looked over there shoulders to see none other than Taj standing at the peak of The King's Dome with his two friends Kojo and Nya. Kojo had been rolling on the floor laughing and Nya had been shaking her head in disapproval. A young gazelle could be seen running away from them and towards the crowd. The crowd parted to let it pass, and watched as it ran down the field.

It was then that Taj noticed the crowd.

"Uh-oh." He muttered. Kojo and Nya were behind him now, hiding from the dagger like stares of the crowd. Taj, meantime, was scanning them. He met the eyes of his father and immediately his ears dropped, and his body shrunk. Kojo had whispered something to Taj, most likely saying that he was in "sooo much trouble."

Taj climbed down the dome and ran to his father. meeting him there, Taj didn't know what to say. He had been late to things before, but usually on purpose. This time, he had totally lost track of time. Taj noted the shadow of disappointment upon his father's face, and his heart sank. Tuck-tailed, he stood before his dad with a downward glance. "Dad..I--"'

Taji cut him off. "Save it. Just get to the front of that line. Now."

There was a solemn sound to his father's voice, and Taj new he better not dare hesitate. Nodding, he made his way to the frontlines. His head was low and his tail dragged as the crowd scowled at him. Taj attempted to ride it off as if it didn't happen. He had to maintain composure now. Focus. making it to where the lionesses stood, he lifted his head and puffed out his chest. He tried to blank out all the negative chattering of the crowd behind him. He had to get himself prepared now, this was no joke.

Taji took his place on the sidelines, and addressed the crowd. "Listen up! When I give the signal, the hunt shall begin. I wish you all the best of luck. And to our future king.."

Taj flinched at these words. He could scarce turn his head to meet his father's glance, but he did, and to his surprise, his father was smiling.

"Make us proud."

Ghost yawned and shook his mane. The elderly, white lion was lying under a tree. The heat was beaming, but luckily there was the Nile River behind him. Ghost stood up aand stretched. "Better get a drink," he said. The lion walked over to the water and drank. He took big gulps. After all he was a large lion. When he finished, he growled. A crocodile, an adolescent one, was swimming up to him. "Foolish reptile," said Ghost. He roared, causing the birds to fly away. The crocodile stopped and turned back, swimming for his life. Ghost snorted. "Serves him right," said the old king. He then walked off. Ghost found a herd of wildebeast. "Time to eat," he said. Being a white lion, Ghost had to stay hidden in the foliage. But he had a plan. The old lion lied down on the ground and pretended to be dead. One curious wildebeast came over to him. It was a young bull. He came a little too close. "Got'cha," thought Ghost. The white lion sprang up and caught the animal. The wildebeast bleeted and released a death cry.
Taj felt his heart pounding in his chest. The bickering behind him didn't help. One of the lionesses next to him had been snickering while another lioness was whispering something in her ear. Both suddenly looked at Taj, raising a brow and giving smug looks. Taj played along. "Don't worry ladies, I'll get you two a spot right in the front of the herd. That's where the kickers are. The REAL fun!" He said with a smile. The two lionesses scoffed and stuck up their noses. Taj rolled his eyes and set his eyes on the horizon. come on dad, lets get this over with he thought out loud. Just then, he herd his father shout something. A deafening silence came over the crowd. Taj suddenly felt adrenaline coursing through him. He dug his claws into the earth, and got himself ready. Silence. One could hear the drop of a pin. This was it. A loud, rumbling roar sounded off, and Taj dashed forward without a second thought, his eyes fixed ahead and the lionesses behind him. It was time to hunt.
Ghost feasted. The wildebeast was deliscous. When he finished, he licked the blood from his chops. He then heard a roar way off in the distance. The roar was distinctive. "Taji must be starting a hunt," Ghost said. He chuckled and stood up. Ghost drank from the river again and licked his chops once more. Ghost walked off. He began thinking about his pride. "That male got lucky," he said. "The only reason I lost was because I got cocky that day," growled Ghost. "If I had been straight headed AND hydrated, I would've ran him off single handely," said Ghost. He then growled and destroyed a fallen branch. The old white lion walked into the jungle. He stood on a hill and looked off into the distance. His pride was relaxing in the sun. Ghost noticed that the new male was lying on a rock. Ghost's mate, Ivana, was sitting down, crying to herself. Ghost missed her and his cubs. They would've been full grown by now. Ghost growled and shook his mane. He then walked off, flicking his tail and killing a fly.
Ghost was sitting by a fallen tree, examining a dead lion cub. "Now who in the world did this?" Ghost asked. But he already knew. A new male was roaming around, trying to takeover a pride. Ghost growled and found a scent trail. It was a musky smell. Ghost walked until he found the male. It was a young male too, only two years of age, just leaving the pride. "Young fool," growled Ghost. He stomped up to the male. The young male turned to him. "How dare you kill that little cub?" Ghost asked. "What are you talking about?" asked the young male. "You know?!" yelled Ghost. He attacked the male. The two fought. Animals around them moved away. Ghost bit down on the young male. "I didn't do it!" yelled the young male. "Then why is its scent on your mouth?" yelled Ghost. They tussled towards a herd of Cape buffalo. "You die now!" yelled Ghost. He released the male and roared. The herd looked up. Ghost said, "Fresh meat!" Ghost ran off. The young male stood up. The herd trampled over him.
Taj lead the pride of lionesses at lightning speed. The herd of wildebeast was just on the horizon, and they were gaining on them. They had been grazing in the feilds. Taj and his pride could not afford to frighten them away too soon. They had to slow down now. Taj crouched down low in the high grass and the lionesses followed. The wildebeast had not yet detected them. They waited silently until Taj gave to signal to move. First, the lionesses would chip away at the outter rows of wildebeast, then Taj would have his oppotunity to move in. The lionesses were doing their job, now all Taj had to do was wait..
Ghost growled to himself as he walked. He had no injuries on him, thanks to experience. The elderly white lion came to a river. Hippos were in the water, yawning and foraging. Ghost drunk some water, keeping his eyes on the hippos, especially the bulls. "I don't need any trouble with them right now," said Ghost. One big male hippo looked over at him. Ghost caught him looking. "Ghost?" asked the male. "Yeah. Wait, Howard?" asked Ghost. The hippo gave a grunt and swam over to Ghost. "How have you been? We haven't seen you in forever," said Howard. "I know. I've been on my own," said Ghost. "Hm. What brings you by?" asked Howard. "Just getting a drink of water. Had to rough up this young male," said Ghost. "Ah," said Howard. The two then parted. Ghost walked back into the trees. He then stopped on a hill. He looked into the distance and saw the wildebeast herd. A pride of lions were hunting. Ghost then recognized a young male lion in the brush. "Taj must be leading the hunt," he said. Ghost smiled and laid down.
Taj had given the signal, and the lionesses were ready. They emerged from the brush in a surprise attack on the herd, and began hacking away at the outer rows. Taj stayed behind and watched as the herd scattered, and the lionesses chased them away. The herd was now growing less dense, and their was a loud commotion ringing through the air. As the wildebeasts fled, the area was surrounded by large dust clouds being kicked up from the hooves and paws pounding the ground and rushing here and there. But as the smoke cleared, there it was - the leader of the herd. Taj locked his sights on the brute. It was huge! The time was right, and Taj didn't dare hesitate. Moving in, he rushed full speed, claws drawn, teeth beared, and roaring with ferocity.  Without giving it much thought, Taj leapt through the air, landing on the leader's back. The large beast had gone wild with furry, and kicked the air in an attempt to shake off it's attacker. Taj held on with all his strength. The beast snorted and moaned, running here and there until Taj noticed the river just to his right. Strong as Taj was, he could feel his grip slipping. This was nothing like the hunt-for-sport game he would play with his friends. This was a real hunt. Taj wondered if he had been in way over his head. He climbed the beast's back further, attempting to make the fatal blow, but just when he thought he had him, the beast flipped over on it's side, and Taj came tumbling down, rolling straight into the river.
Ghost got bored and walked off. He yawned and looked up. The sun was going down. "Time to head downwards," he said. "Prey usually runs downhill in order to get the good foliage," said Ghost. The white old male lion walked into the brush. As he walked, he heard the calls of hyenas, not far off. "They must've noticed the herd of wildebeast," said Ghost. He then stopped as a little lion cub came up to him. The cub was tawny and a male. "Hi little guy," said Ghost. The cub was admiring Ghost's coat. Ghost chuckled. The cub's mother came and picked up her cub. "Thank you for not killing him," she mumbled. "I would never kill a cub, or any infant animal in that matter," said Ghost. He then walked off. Ghost reached the lower land and laid down under a tree, with white flowers growing on the ground. Ghost smiled and took a nap. He could hear the river just several steps ahead. Ghost then dreamed of being with his pride. He dreamed of lying with his mate in the sun and licking his cubs. He dreamed of his cub days.
Having shaken it's opponent, the large wildebeast got up, and grunting, it ran to join it's scattered herd. The crowd had been watching from afar. Taji saw what happened, and immediately ran for his son. The lionesses saw too, and were hysterical with laughter. Taji made it to the riverside and scanned for Taj. Bubbles could be seen breaking the surface of the water, and before long, Taj was up gasping for air. "Grab my paw, son." Taji said, reaching out to Taj. Taj looked grabbed on and let his father pull him to land. Emerging from the river, water rushed from his soaked fur like mini waterfalls. His mane was covering his eyes so he couldn't see, but his ears were working just fine enough for him to notice everyone laughing at him. He grumbled, and laid plopped down onto the ground, covering his face with his paws. Taji shook his head, and nudged his son. "Get up Taj." He said. Taj peaked through his parted mane so he could make out his father's face. He stood up and shook himself off. The crowd dispersed and headed for the King's Dome. The hunt was over. Taj had failed. Taji did his best to reassure him, but Taj grunted. "No." he growled, brushing past him. Taji was taken aback. "Son-" he said. Taj faced him. "I'm not gonna just go back with the pride now and pretend this is all okay. I failed dad. You saw! I'm not meant to be king." He roared.
Ghost awoke to a roar. The roar sounded sad and despressed. Ghost stood up and yawned. He stretched and shook his large white mane. Ghost listened for the roar again, but it never came back. "I wonder what's going on?" he asked. Ghost walked back to the high lands. He saw that the herd had scattered and the pride had went back to the King's Dome. Ghost was about to leave when he saw Taji and his soaken wet son, Taj. The two male lions were by the river, Taj yelling at his father. "How dare he?" growled Ghost. He made sure he was well hidden while watching them. "Taj must've failed in the hunt," said Ghost. "Those lionesses are gonna' give him hell probably," he said. Ghost just sat there, swaying his tail from back and forth. He kept his eyes on the two lions, just in case Taj didn't try to fight his father. "Careful Taji," Ghost said to himself. "Your son is capable of overpowering you," Ghost said. He then looked back at the sky. The sun was almost gone. The hyenas called again. They were sounding closer.
Taj watched as the pride entered the Dome. It was easy to see how little respect they had for him, but who could blame them? Taj was still soaked, he was uncomfortable, and he would have rather been anywhere else..or anyone else at that moment. He sat down and sighed. Taji walked up to him and sat by him, but as Taj was watching the pride, Taji was watching his son. The two were silent. Taj frowned "I really messed up, didn't I?" He asked in a painful tone. Taji faced him, a look of compassion on his face. "My son, you are too hard on yourself." he sighed. "This is not the end-all-be-all. You are simply not ready. But there will be more opportunities. I hope now atleast you understand the consequences of your attitude. You are to be king. It is your place in life, and soon enough you will see that. Once you do, then the others will too." Taj was silent. The pride was now inside, and the two males would have to head back. Taji nudged his son, then gestured for him to follow back to the Dome. Taj let his father get a head start, then he got to his feet and watched from behind. "But I never wanted to be king." He grumbled.
Ghost watched as the two males entered the dome. "Get ready for some chewing out," Ghost said. He then heard the hyena calls again. The clan of hyenas appeared amongst the fading herd of wildebeast. "I hate hyenas," growled Ghost. He ran down the hill. Ghost bounded towards the herd, covering a few miles in eight minutes. Ghost roared, sending echoes throughout the land. The hyena clan saw him. The herd bolted. "Get back to the lower lands, now!" yelled Ghost, roaring again. A few hyenas scattered. But the clan leader, a female, stepped up to the white lion. "You dare challenge a clan of hyenas feline?" asked the female. "You must not recognize me Siba," said Ghost. He held his head high, revealing the three gashes on his chest. They were old and healed wounds. The female gasped. "Ghost," she whispered. Ghost smirked and roared again. Most of the clan fled. Only the female and several others stayed. "I guess we got a fight on our paws," said Ghost. The elderly lion growled and leaped forward. The hyenas leapt
Taj followed behind his father, entering the Dome. By now, it was late. The rest of the pride had been getting settled in, ready for bed. A few of the lionesses had been laying around licking their wounds, and when one of them noticed Taj, they exclaimed "Don't look now! Here comes our king!" This was followed by laughter all around the dome. Another cried out "What's the matter Taj? A 'girl's job' too much work for you?" Taj scowled at her, but the growing hysteria ripped him apart. He lowered his head and walked ahead of his father, dragging his tail, he made it to his usual spot in the Dome where he slept. Normally Taj would have a slick comeback, but this time he was far too disappointed in himself. He could'nt help but agree with them. The crowd soon went on with their usual business, completely ignoring him, and he tried to shut them all out.

Reign of Taj
Setting
Takes place in africa..that's pretty much all I've got people.
Plot

The generations have come and gone, and with each new generation their comes a new king. The days of king Abazu are remembered throughout the land, as his reign served to pave a solid foundation for future generations. The land is thriving and all seem to be happy within the kingdom. But now a new king must step up to reign. Next in line is a young lion named Taj, named after his father, the former king Taji. He has been brought up to know the responsibility of the crown, and now that he is coming of age, will he be ready? He is expected to finish his training, pick a queen, and take the crown all within the year. Being under a lot of pressure, Taj would rather just live the lazy life like every other lion his age. But will his responsibilities catch up with him? Even if Taj does choose the crown, he must first win over his pride, who seems to think very little of him due to his lack of passion for the royal position. If Taj won't own up, will someone else be forced to take the crown? Surely it is unorthodox, but a choice must be made for the good of the kingdom..before time runs out.
