The U.S.A in the summer of 2038

In the year 2020, an enterprising paleontologist skilled in teh arts of biochemistry revealed an incredible creation to the world; a device capable of precise and easy genetic manipulation.  His original intentions were to A) Engineer a dinosaur by removing the recently evolved genes in predatory birds, and replacing them with those of crocodiles, B) To create a complete guide of the effect of every single gene, and to C) Maybe finally figure out what a hybrid between a salmon and a pig would taste like.  However, much to the dismay of this professor of the sciences, of his comtemporaries, and of his equaly eccentric relations, the polititians and the activists took this idea and attempted to stomp on it.  A huge debate rose up, especially after it was deemed entirely constitutional in Febuary of 2021.  In 2029, when teh argument was reinstated, due to the recent convention of altering one's offspring, or, heaven forbid, (sarcasm) artificaly splicing the child from the parent's genes and then growing the child in a machine!  Or even, and they would really get blown off by this; choosing some genes on purpose, or maybe even throwing in some new ones!  However, due to the Supreme Court, at the time, being heavily Silic leaned, (the two heavy political groups over the debat refered to themselves as "Silicon" and Quartz") it was once again ruled constitutional.  This led to the Purity Riots of '030 and '032, and the eventual official collapse of the States in 2037.  Two months later, the L.D.S of the U.S grouped into their "homeland", Utah, and formed the Holy Mormon Army, which will house refugees from either side.  Teh collapse of technology has been the worst right up "Tornado Alley" in particular, due to the Longest Drought, which was immediately followed by widespread flooding in the area. The far end of the Quartz, who have now reformed into a group known as the "Pure Crystal", have formed settlements all along the east coast, and control most trade at this point.  They are quite well defended, and being teh far end of teh Quartz philosophy, will slaughter any impure human upon sight, or upon the discovery they are impure.  There are many small areas, towns, almost, trying to regain status.  But this is still a war; though thre is no formal army, except for the one in Utah, a system quite like Feudalism has taken hold of the Eastern united states.  While teh social state beyond Utah is unknown, the are between it and the feudalistic area is total chaos.
