The Endless Sand
Setting
This starts within the Colony, a city built within a semi-tropical forest within a large valley.  The mountains to the side are imsurmountable.  Within the forest, the animal life is composed of several groups of large amphibians, which act rather as mammals do today, a group of gigantic dragonflies, the largest species having a whopping wingspan of 18 feet, a diverse group of gliding/flying squid, and a special animal that lives within a plant, it's eyes sticking out of the stalk.  When an herbivorous animal comes near, it scares it away, by screeching, and shaking the plant, which gives it food.  There are also species kinds of quite large lichen.  It is very, very moist.

Plot
The Colony has lived in this sheltered valley for longer then even the archeologists can remember, living in perfect harmony with nature, a fusion if you will, of an entirely urbanized area, and yet still a lush forest.  However, space is running out.  Even with their careful tecniches to avoid following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they are still crowding themselves.  But they remember that day, that year, long ago.  All that was left was the Dragonfly, the Salamander, the Squid, the Fern, and the Flesh, and no matter how well these have done for them, they still lust for the forgotten beasts of old.  To the north lies insurmountable mountains, as well as to the east and south, but to the west, there lies an endless desert.  None who have stumbled into it's lonely depths have returned entirely sane.  But a single stream, no, river flows from the center of the desert, and that is one of saltwater.  As time runs out for the Colony, they are gathering a group of adventurers, of wise-men, of their saviors, to trek across the desert and find an ocean.

History
The biota here is from the Moist Era in my personal speculative evolution.  ALso, there's a secret about the desert.  I won't say here though.
