Notes
The fierce and ugly roar that bellowed behind her proved she had little time left. The brute trailing her was a well-muscled, thick-skinned Rex, following her with such anger that he created craters with the ground with his footprints as he ran. The mother hurried, moving as fast as she could go while carrying the small, sleeping mound in her short stubby arms.
Her baby rocked back and forth as she ran, threatening to slip from her grip multiple times but always managing to stay put in his mother's grasp all while taking a post-birth nap.
She needed to get him to safety before their pursuer caught them, because if he did, it would be over for the both of them. She struggled to keep running for her offspring, dirt and pebbles spraying out from beneath her massive feet.
Before she could even contemplate what was happening, the Rex was so close she could smell his rancid breath and his warm breath on the back of her neck. She tried to hurry her pace, but before she could speed up, a sudden burst of pain hit her in the back of her neck, followed by the warm sensation of fresh blood dripping down her back.
She choked and sputtered, threads of blood and saliva dripping down her jaws. The Rex had delivered a hard, good blow to her neck, and satisfied with his work, he turned and hurried away.
The mother dropped to her knees, still coughing out blood and choking on it. She gently laid down her sleeping infant, setting him down in a clump of tall, soft grass. He looked so precious there, wrapped in a blanket of green and sleeping soundly without a care in the world. He slowly blinked open his eyes, which were a warm, chocolate brown.
For a short moment, the desperate and dying mother simply wished she could freeze these last few minutes with her baby and stare into his big, innocent brown eyes forever. She gave her child a final tired, forced smile before she fell to the ground.
