It was not common for the hybrid to be out at this time of day. She was tired and slow, not having enough sleep. Her stomach was what awoke her to go on her hunt, for food. She hadn't eaten since the day before, and that was a small meal. She followed her sense of smell, and her hearing for a possible find. She heard someone close by, and smelt possible food. As she walked closer her senses were confirmed, it was the Asian resturant. The only thing was that the sounds weren't coming from inside the resturaunt but the dumpster behind it. She noticed the smells, didn't seem like the food was edible, but she would take her chance. She popped her head around the corner to glance at the dumpster, but she wasn't the only person there. A boy, around her age was there, but he wasn't like her, he was human. She held her breath and tried not to make a sound as she left, but as always she had to be socially akward and sneeze. It was a high pitched one, but it wasn't a quiet one, she knew for sure that he would have heard her.

Jett snapped his head to the side suddenly at the startling sound, searching for its origin. What he saw wasn't what he expected – a head full of black curls topped off with animal ears, wolf, he guessed. He stared at her without blinking or moving, his heart pounding silently in his chest. Though nothing on his face or in his posture betrayed him he was nervous and startled by the girl's appearance.

“Don't move,” he said, putting his hands out before him, palms facing her.

Slowly, with movements that were highly deliberate, he climbed out of the dumpster and grabbed his hat, carefully adjusting it into place over his brow. His hands were dirty, covered in slime and rot. These he scraped against a piece of cardboard, then wiped on the knees of his pants. As Jett cleaned his arms he turned slightly to peer at the girl, wondering if she had run off yet.

Her eyes enchanted him. They were bright blue yet seemed warm, as if he could swim in them, and the contrast made between them and her black brows made their color all the more startling. He stared a little too long, he felt, and diverted his own eyes to the ground. Even when he looked away he could still see her face, now burned into his memory.

He took cautious steps towards the girl. Before he could come close enough to touch he held up a finger, opened his palms to her, then reached quickly behind one of her large, wolfish ears. His hand drew back, now with a bruised apple clutched between his fingers.

“Here.”

Will her eyes light up? Jett wondered, waiting for her response.

She wanted to run, but she felt as if she was glued to her spot. His words shook her, as she obeyed while he faced his palms towards her. She watched as he climbed out of the dumpster and rid himself of the garbage that was clinging onto him. She stood there as he moved to put on his hat, and adjust it to let it rest on his brows. She watched him as he looked at her, she felt their eyes meet, and she slowely looked away. She was scared, for most of her life people made fun if her, she only felt safe around her family. Now she was alone, with no family to support her, just this boy and her. She finally had the confidence to move, she stepped back a few steps as he came towards her. Her eyes widened as he was close, he held out a finger and his palms, still nothing in them. She stood still as he reached behind her ear, his hand now holding a bruised apple. She was hungry, and he was offering it to her, her eyes softened and seemingly sparkled as she reached out cautiously to take it. "T-Thank you." She said, softly her voice sweet and cautious. She looked over the apple a few times, tossing it between her paws. She sniffed it and took a bite, the juice filling her mouth. It was a bit soft, but it was food probably the most she will have for a while. Her lips curved into a smile, looking into his darker eyes, with her pale blue ones.

Jett sat into his hip, watching her carefully. It wasn't often he saw a hybrid on the city streets, especially while the sun was still high. Though they were most commonly found in the wilderness, many of the intelligent ones made their way to the camps on city borders and lived among the motley assortment of beings that usually populated those areas. He had only had the privilege of meeting a handful of hybrids who weren't completely feral, and even then the majority had bee halfwits, unable to perform basic tasks and needing special supervision.

Jett assumed this girl was lost, possibly a new pilgrim who had been separated from her group or a loner. He wasn't sure how to proceed – she was shy, obviously, and he was sure that she wasn't likely to trust a stranger like him even if he had managed to enchant her for the moment. However, he couldn't leave her on her own, so there was little left for him to do.

“Where do you live?”

Due to a Sudden Disappearance...

The roleplay will be started over from here on - should the missing roleplayer in question ever make it out of whatever fireswamp, jungle, or mountainous terrain they have become lost in they will have the opportunity to appear in this new rendition of the roleplay as the same character they started with or a new one.
The dumpster behind the old Asian restaurant was overflowing with smells and garbage. There was dried grease clinging to the sides of the bin, shining dully in the bleak midday sun. Jett was staring it down on the other side of the alley, face as blank as a stone carving. He may not have had a wash in days, but that in no way made him loathe dumpster diving any less. The textures and sounds were what really did it – rotten vegetables and the squelching noise his shoes made at the bottom of the bin bothered him the most.

The ratty bag hanging from his shoulder on a long, leather strap slipped and fell to the ground with a soft thud. His jacket followed, but before hitting the ground it was folded carefully and hidden, along with the bag, under a wooden crate. The black hat that sat atop his head was carefully hidden by the side of the dumpster, a place easily reached in case he was chased away and had to quickly pick it up. With steady fingers he rolled his sleeves up past his elbows, then placed his hands on the edge of the dumpster and launched himself up, over, and in with gracefulness only found in things long practiced.

Jett plunged his hands into the filth and began shifting through it, pushing anything large and obstructive to the far side of the bin or out onto the ground. Smells from the disturbed garbage grew stronger as he moved things and dug around hoping to find something for his next meal.

If a zombie was an undead human, did that mean they were edible?

Verit stared quizzically down at the brainless and very clumsy thing that had been so smart as to fall and get stuck in an uncovered manhole. It probably stepped right into the pit, one leg hanging down into the hole as the rest of its body lay belly-down over it, kind of like a board lain over a ditch. Nudging its lolling head around with his foot, Verit contemplated the viability of it being the day's lunch. Probably past the expiry date, but he'd tried to eat nastier things before.

He did not expect it to suddenly snap and try to take off his leg as he gave it an experimental kick, and he quickly scuttled backwards out of reach. "Hey!" he shouted at it. "I'm the one that's going to do the eating around here if there's any to be done!" Luckily for him, however, the zombie didn't give chase- it was mostly still stuck. It gurgled and hissed and shuddered about, but only succeeded in snapping its own arm off. And the rest came tumbling after.

Dangit.

No eating it was, then.

Grumbling, he turned his back on the manhole and scanned the area for some other easy picking. No luck- the front of the Asian restaurant was pretty deserted for all he could see.

His nose told him otherwise, though. Underneath the reek of garbage was the telltale scent of human. Living, breathing human.

Now, where was the lone rascal...?

Jett's arms were plunged into the garbage well past his elbows. The smell had made its way deep into his nose and skin, and he knew well from past experience that it would stick with him until he bathed. He felt his fingers rub against the skin of a fruit he thought he recognized, and upon digging it out he found an apple clutched in his hand which he promptly pocketed. Anything he could find would do at that point.

He looked up at the sun, staring blankly for a few moments before returning to his task. He wasn't eager to be caught in the dark, and since the last attack on the solar station by the vandals none of the light forecasts had been accurate. Light and darkness fluctuated without any detectable pattern. It may have been midday, but that didn't mean it was certain the sun would stay lit for any longer.

Jett turned back to the garbage before him. He wasn't going to head back to the Vaudeville camp with a single apple even if it had him digging until the sun threatened to fall from the sky.

Turning around in a circle with his nose to the air, Verit pushed through the near-overwhelming smell of pollution, smoke, sewage, and trash and headed towards where he thought the human's scent was strongest. It seemed to originate from the alley on the other side of the restaurant. The place wasn't visited often, it seemed.

In case the human on the off chance happened to be part of a gang, Verit deliberately made his footsteps audible as he approached. He didn't want to chance being fired at or whatever. Honestly, if he had his way, he would have just jumped the thing from above, snap its neck and be over with it- but again, problem was he couldn't have his way. He should have eaten that girl when he had the chance, and then he wouldn't be in this predicament.

New age ghouls were so poorly designed.

Verit turned the corner. The human was arm-deep in garbage- a male, it seemed. Not that it really mattered. After sizing it up, it didn't really seem to Verit that the human was part of any gang. Lunch, then?

Jett heard the footsteps but kept up with his work even after the stranger was in view. He glanced up and stared for a moment at the man before him, then turned back to his work like he hadn't been disturbed in the first place. It wasn't unusual for someone to run into him while he was digging through the trash, and he didn't seem to show any embarrassment at his situation.

He had noticed the stranger's appearance, and it had caught his attention. It wasn't easy to put his finger on, but he knew that, despite looks, this person wasn't quite human. Maybe a more humanoid alien, he thought, but he didn't seem to quite fit that profile either.

In a fluid action, Jett hopped the side of the dumpster and landed gently on his feet. He grabbed his hat and, with one hand, flipped it up in the air and ducked his head underneath it. With the other hand he flicked his wrist, shooting his found apple out at the stranger.

“Catch.”

Verit caught the apple easily- it wasn't a hard throw, after all- and paused, staring intently at the human. He couldn't help the slight tilt of his head nor the furrowing of his mismatched brows. The human was just... So strange. Couldn't it tell he was going to eat it? Hmm... Maybe that was a bit of a stretch. Perhaps the human thought he was one of its kind- but surely it wouldn't just give its apple away? Food was scarce for all species down on the streets, nobody just rummages around in trash because there was nothing better to do.

In the back of his mind, Verit reminded himself that he was wasting valuable time and might just end up letting his meal slip through his fingers. At the forefront of said mind, however, Verit was far, far too busy being utterly perplexed to do anything other than stare at the human, bemused.

What?

Jett gave a single nod – he was beginning to piece things together, but he was still unsure of exactly what kind of creature this stranger happened to be. He knew most of the common types, but there seemed to be a constant stream of new-coming aliens and hybrids, and he didn't have the time to remember all of them.

“More your taste?”

Jett reached behind him and pulled a sizable chunk of meat in his hand which he held out in an offering manner. It was raw and smelled like it had been so for quite some time – there was no doubt it was a handful of days past its expiration, but in those streets it was better than nothing. He had often found better pickings, but of late he had suspected someone else had taken to the same dumpster and was robbing it of its contents before he got the chance.

He imagined, for just a few seconds, that it was probable that this stranger was that very person, but he hadn't seen them before, and he was very sure he could recognize such a distinguished face if they'd ever happened to cross paths before, even in passing.

No, no wait. Since when were humans so content with giving things away? There had to be something wrong with this one. Possibly a disease, maybe some alien parasite eating away and its brain. Potentially a brain tumor. Maybe it had worms.

Verit was feeling a chill attack the back of his neck, making his hackles raise. If only the human wasn't so- so weird! He could just eat it already! It needed to fight back or something! Be afraid! Anything other than this strange behaviour. Verit was balking, and needed some sort of confirmation to make him go for it. Curse the cautious nature.

Verit growled lowly, baring his teeth and lowering his stance into a more threatening one. Kill the thing before he lost his mind over it, that was his decision.

Jett was no fool – the second he heard the start of a growl he knew he was intended as lunch, but there was no chance of him escaping without serious injury which was something he wasn't intent on risking.  There was little for him to do, and even after taking a quick glance around the alley he couldn't find anything in range to use as a shield or weapon that the creature couldn't get to before him. He relaxed his posture even more in an attempt to look harmless, open, easy.

“Hungry? It smells like pork.”

It was an unusual scene like a poorly done Western showdown, which Jett was incredibly aware of. He'd been in too many to count with all sorts of creatures, so he had begun to find different formulas that seemed to get him out of trouble when he faced it. His tactic: Disarm.

Verit was already deaf to the human's words when he lunged forward, the apple dropping to the ground as he shot towards the human a speeding vehicle. Only creatures not from this planet were capable of such bursts of speed, and in the moment Verit was confident in his ability to overtake the human. They were a weak species, with barely any natural self-defense methods... They were far inferior to him.

Verit smashed his elbow into the side of the human's head, landing a hard kick to its legs. However, his knees suddenly buckled and his movements slowed drastically the moment he whipped back around. Damnit...!

He staggered, lightheaded, before collapsing backwards, his chest heaving. Black spots threatened to overtake his vision as his breathing came in ragged. He felt a familiar, feverish burn hit him, the telltale sign that he'd exerted himself too much all at once. He swore under his breath, his limbs suddenly seeming far too heavy to lift. He really should have eaten that girl when he had the chance.

Tomorrow Came to Our Despair
Setting
Earth is a dangerous place, whether in the hybrid-infested countryside or crumbling, dark cities, but no place is more dangerous or rough than New Chicago. Whether out on the streets or high in the penthouses, no one's truly safe.
Plot

The world has become a new place. Some people call it impossible, but others just call it apocalyptic. There's barely a government, and what's left of it is corrupt and dangerous - the people live in factions, gangs, or try to survive on their own, and the only peace between them are through the pacts that have been made. The rich thrive and keep themselves safe, but anyone unfortunate enough to be less than that spends every day hoping to stay alive.

Species:
Ghouls - they're intelligent beings, humanoid in appearance. Their skin rots, and their lifespan is determined by how long their meat stays on their bones.

Zombies - they're dumb and benign unless angered or bothered. They're brainless, so essentially they don't do anything except wander around, bump into things, and (on the occasion) turn into a terrifying killing and flesh-eating monster. These aren't characters, but they can be used by any writer as a tool, the way one would write about a pet or object a character interacts with. If you plan on using a zombie, PM me to clarify what you want to use one for.

Humans - just like us, but now they share their planet with many other species. Many feel cheated out of their home, and most scramble to keep their kind from dying out.

Aliens - there are many, many kinds, and over the years they've adapted to the newness of the world. From tall to small, these creatures come in all shapes, sizes, and origins. (PM me to clarify what kind of alien you would like to be - it has to be your own creation or one that someone else in the roleplay has made up).

Mutts - an alien-human, alien-alien, ghoul-alien offspring.

Hybrids - always different, always weird, hybrids are animal-human-zombie creatures. Whether four legs or two, each species of hybrids are as oddly animal as they are humanoid. Some can talk, most can't, but all have a highly feral nature and are willing to 'defend' themselves quickly through force.

Additional - any species you think should be on this list that isn't. PM me if you have any ideas.

THE ROLEPLAY SLOGAN: Falcon hug that piece of beef jerkwad

No godmoding, guys - be cool

Come up with your own, unique charater, but make their personality realistic. No one likes a Mary Sue or an impossible character.

You only get to kill another character, or injure, if you have the writer's permission.

Don't let things that happen in character affect or influence how you treat someone out of character, and please don't use your character as a way to get at another roleplayer. Don't be cheap.

If you want to write a huge post, go for it! Write a huge one! But, before you do so, write up a message in the OOC chat to let everyone else know it might be a bit and to wait to post until you finish.

If you need to write a post that connects directly to a previous post, but you're worried that someone else might post before you can finish writing, say something in the OOC chat and everyone will wait to post until your done, but you only have a 4 hour window to finish up and post.

Always check the OOC before you post, just so you know what's up.

Breaking the rules can end up in being expelled (kicked out, or whatever you want to call it) from the roleplay depending on the offence.

Lastly, if you have any questions, hit me up. If you choose to be an alien, mutt, or hybrid, send me a message giving me more information on your character as well as an example of what your roleplay post might be like so I can get a sense of what kind of writer you are. If I like your moxie, you're in.
