Things weren't right in the Arctic. Packs were splitting, cubs were loners expected to fend for themselves.

One polar bear hoped to band together with a lone pup and a green-eyed female wolf, in hopes of keeping them all safe and happy.
The female wolf seemed wary, and the polar bear awaited her response.
Hopefully they could survive and thrive together, or at least the wolves could band together for the common good.

Now it was up to the polar bear to try to convince the female wolf of his plan....

Atka thundered on, chasing after the scent of the small wolf pup. He didn't even bother to make sure the silvery-white wolf was keeping up, or even following.

The ground flew by underneath him as his large feet sped along. It was a surprisingly elegant gait for such a large animal. His muscles rippled and the harsh wind played with his fur. His large, black nose stuck high in the air, desperately hoping for the scent of the pup to grow stronger. Suddenly, though, a burst of powdery snow flew up over a ledge. It stung Atka's eyes, filling his nose and chasing any trace of scent from his nose. He stumbled and halted.

Turning around, he let out a deep throated, frustrated growl.

"This snow! This wind! It's ruined the scent!" He stomped his paw angrily. "That poor pup is still out there somewhere." He pondered worriedly for a moment, then he remembered the silvery-white wolf with those impressive green eyes. He looked around to see if she was still there.

The giant bear was so fast! Fang almost struggled to keep up with him. I don't even know his name, realised Fang. Eventually it became a little easier to run, because of her momentum, and Fang started worrying about stopping. She tried to keep the wolf pup's scent, but it was was hard to do that and stay upright.

The bear was several meters ahead of her. Fang closed her eyes for a few seconds to try and relax, but then the bear cried out suddenly and she stumbled over her paws, rolled over a few times and managed to stop herself. She lay in the snow, dazed for a bit when the bear turned, apparently looking for her. "I'm here!" said Fang, straightening up and shaking snow out of her fur.

Atka watched in slight amusement as the silvery-white wolf shook the snow from her fur.

"I've lost the scent of the pup." He spoke in a voice that was low and growly. "The wind blew a burst of snow up into my eyes and nose. But hopefully we're at least closer to him. Soon, hopefully, soon we can find him. I think we should continue walking this direction as long as we can. With any luck, the pup will be walking in the same general direction and we can catch up." Atka started to turn away, but then remembered something. "By the way," He queried, "I don't know your name.. Mine is Atka Nanuq, call me Atka." He gave a slight bow as he introduced himself.

"My name is Fang," she said to the great bear, Atka Nanuq, bowing her head a little bit to be polite. "I agree with your idea - it's better then wandering around in the snow being lost, anway. Also, if you would like, I can howl to the sky and the pup might hear me. If it can, it may howl back and give us a better idea of where it is. If the pup cannot howl for some reason, well, at least we might alert the pup to our prescence."

Fang hoped the bear would agree to her idea. It had been a while scince she had howled about anything, and what was the point of howling if one didn't have a reason?

. . . .

Elite leaped forward, snow flew in every derection. The race was on! The Rabbit raced over the snow but Elite was somewhat faster but cocky in the same way. She raced after snow flying behind as she pushed through the snow. She was hungry and the first sight of this small sickly hare set her on a food ranpage. She sped forward even more her strength was running out. She knew she had to catch this hare now or she would miss her chance. She pushed forward with her hind legs and her claw barely skimmed the hares soft fur.  The Hare turned just as quickly as her studden attack.

Elite slid to a stop and peared down the small hole. She clawed at it and hissed in anger at her loss. Another day with out food. But what would that turn into? One day no food, a week, a month until she had died of starvation!? Elite paws even harder until her paw pads hurt from the scraping of the ice.

Atka was shocked. He hadn't expected such easy acceptance of his idea, especially the part about he himself joining with this pack. He was thrilled that Fang had agreed. Grinning broadly, he replied.

"That sounds like a wonderful idea. Hopefully the pup will be able to respond. We might even be able to find other lone wolves in search of a pack. It's strange and unnatural how many wolves wander lone these days." Atka looked off into the distance for a moment before he continued. "Do you have a place you call home? We could use my cave, or somewhere else, depending on what you wolves would be most comfortable with?" He looked intently into the green eyes of the wolf, waiting for an answer, while the wind swirled eddies of powdery snow around his feet.

Elite let out a loud roar of anger. Her paws were cracked and bleeding and she hadnt caught the rabbit. She finally sat down and licked each of her fore-paws and then got up and walked carefully back into the snowy-plain. She was sure something might have heared her and she wanted to get on the move now. She was still small and easy prey for a full gorwn bear or a pack of wolves, and with the weather and lack of food she was sure they would love the chance to get a snack out of her. She flicked the tip of her tail and she countied forward. She had to keep thinking over otherthings then food for her stomach made this annoying growling noise.

"A cave?" Fang asked Atka in interest. She'd heard about, but never really been in another creature's cave. "That sounds interesting. I had some territory by a bit of forest, so I've never actually been in a cave. Does your cave provide shelter from heavy snow?" she asked him. "By the way, I'm glad you accepted my idea. I'll proceed now."

Fang took a few steps away from Atka and sat back on her hind legs. She breathed deeply, catching her scent, Atka's and many others, like a starving snow leopard and many prey scents - and maybe a lone wolf pup. She exhaled, breathed in again and howled, as long and loud as she could. She filled her howl with the thought of the pup, and with feelings of welcome. She let the howl trail off slowly as she ran out of breath.

When Fang had her breath back, she said to Atka, "If we are going to form a pack, I believe we should have an alpha. But how will we choose the alpha? If we decide to do it the normal way, by an organised fight, you will no doubt win." Fang had no wish to pit herself against Atka.

Atka listened to the howl of the wolf. He couldn't help but smile; there was something so natural and comforting about a wolf howl. It spoke of things being as they should be and it gave hope that they could be right again one day.

"Mhm," Atka said with a nod. "my cave is large, and definitely sheltered from the snow. We would be safe there." Atka lowered his head for a moment then, pondering the question of alpha. "You're right, a fight wouldn't be very fair. I don't know much about the alpha's in wolf packs, but aren't they usually male? I think maybe I should be alpha once we have more of us. My size would enable me to keep the peace and enforce the rules easily. As for now, you are more than welcome to be alpha. Also, we could arrange something where you remained alpha regardless of the pack size, but I was your right-hand enforcer of the rules? That could work." Atka looked up. "What do you think?"

"Well, in most packs there is a single alpha, normally male, but sometimes female," Fang replied. "I once heard a few packs had two alphas, male and female."

She thought for a moment, then said, "Well, if we use your first idea, it will give either the idea that this pack is either a pack for many creatures, trying to be protected in some way, or not a pack at all. The second option would be more wolf-freindly. It may give the first impression that I have overcome a bear, or that somthing is wrong with the world."

Fang thought a bit more. "I do not really wish for the responsibility of being alpha, but will accept it if you don't wish for it either. If you are alpha, that gives you the right to  challange other pack leaders to battles if the need arises somehow, but I don't think that would even be neccecerry, as few sane creatures will want to take on a polar bear. I am personnaly more preffering the idea of you as alpha, but maye if you do but don't want to be, we could have two alphas," she finished, after having tried exploring every possibility she could think of.

Elite sat, sitting fur fluffed up against the cold. She was anger at her misfourtne and knew she would be hungry again tonight. Somehow her spirits lifted at a wolf howl. She flicked her ears up and stood up. Oh sometimes she wish she could be a wolf and howl back. Something tugged at her deep within to find that source. She leaped from the snow bank and slyly as her kind does runs through the snow without really leaving a track.

She didnt know what it was until she looked harder. A wolf with a polar bear. How strange. She krepted forward on the snow. She hoped to god that her black stipe down her back didnt give her away. She could proably take on the wolf or the polar bear alone, but if it came from them both not likeing her here well then she was screwed in a fight and would have no choice but to flee. She perked up her ears trying to get a drift at what they were saying. All she maked out was "pack".

Atka was about to answer Fang when his ears picked up a sound. It was hardly anything, barely noticeable even to his sensitive ears, but it was enough to make him pause. Lifting up his regal nose to the breeze, Atka inhaled deeply.
Aha! He thought triumphantly. The scent of a sly snow leopard danced on the breeze. Atka Nanuq shrugged it off, although he was sure the leopard was eavesdropping. He could tell from the scent that the snow leopard was not well fed, and even the fittest of lone leopards wouldn't have been able to tackle a polar bear and a wolf. Lowering his head to Fang's eye level again, Atka finally responded.

"I think we should both be alpha. I don't know enough about the inner workings of a wolf pack to be sole alpha. Besides, this way we will give the impression that neither of us has been overcome, all in need are welcome. Even, maybe, a snow leopard, if that were to interest one." Atka chuckled slightly before going on to explain his strange remark. "There is a malnourished snow leopard lurking not far. She, for it is a female, is close enough to pick up some of our conversation, I believe. Shall we invite her over?"

*Spry lays clouded in the mounds of snow that embrace her as she rests, her body feels tired and restless, her eyes open slightly and her head slowly tennatively lift's in unsureity, she glances around, then sniffs, her eyes narrow and she slowly rises shaking the snow from her fur and looking round her cautirously. She then rolls her shoulder's and stretches her head low then in a curving upward slink, her fur catching up and the base of her tail up high, she roars in a yawn stretching everything to it's fullest extent and then leaping forward in a graceful bound. Her eyes glance round gently curiously sniffing the air that nips her nose gently, she hasn't had a filled belly in over three night's now, her stomach rumbles with urge, and she huffs and glances round gently moving into a walk her eyes narrowed she walks looking from side to side, her eyes watch the surrouding area, her paw pads hit the snow with a trodded toughness, in this enviorment, ~if your not tough....your not gonna make it.... atleast thats what her father seemed to feel.~ * she thinks to herself and continues on walking, hoping that soon enough something...would just turn up.*

Fang thought some more about what Atka had said before answering. "I don't know about inviting her over . . ." Fang muttered so only Atka would hear, then raised her voice and said, "but if any creature wishes to come to our pack - which would be more of clan, rather - then they come and if they offer freindship or wish for protection - or food, perhaps - then I think we should welcome them." She had chosen her words carefully and aimed them rather directly at the snow leopard.

"By the way Atka," Fang added, "should we think of a pack-slash-clan name? I'm not very inentive with names, unless you count jumbling random letters and call that inventive. Let me know if you think of anything, please." Fang then angled her head towards where she deduced the snow leopard's hiding place was, and looking at it out of the corner of her eyes.
